Rise of the Runelords

The Story So Far...

Introduction

For five years, the faithful of Sandpoint have attended church in temporary structures erected after fire destroyed the previous temple, and while their new religious leader was helpful, kind, and wise, church just wasn’t the same. Now, the new cathedral is finally done! All that remains is for the Swallowtail Festival to renew the site’s blessings from the gods and it will be as if the Sandpoint fire had never occurred.

Whether a resident of the town of Sandpoint, or just in town for the festival, your journey begins here. If you need help in formulating a background or any other particulars, feel free to get with me directly.

Local residents will know of the Late Unpleasantness, which occurred a few years back.

Character Creation

Your character will be first level, of almost any official race ¹ and class ², and you can choose one of these additional traits during character creation.

¹: All Core races are obviously okay. I’ll allow most Featured races and some Uncommon ones, but check with me to ensure it fits.
²: Core, Base, Alternate and Hybrid classes are okay. I’m not familiar with the Occult rules, but if you really want to play one, get with me and we’ll make it work

Session 1 - The Festival
Our journey begins...

The Swallowtail Festival began promptly, as scheduled, on the Autumnal Equinox. The square before the church quickly became crowded as locals and travelers arrived, and several merchant tents featuring food, clothes, local crafts, and souvenirs were there to meet them.

Turnout for the opening speeches was quite respectable, and the four keynote speakers each delivered short but well-received welcomes to the gathered festival attendees.

  • The mayor’s speech was full of her trademark charisma and enthusiasm. After a short, well-intentioned dig at local tanner (and notorious workaholic) Larz Rovanky, she turned the platform over to..
  • Sheriff Hemlock , who brought the crowd down a bit with a serious reminder to be safe around the evening’s bonfire. He also held a moment of silence to remember those who lost their lives in the fire that claimed the town’s previous church several years ago.
  • The next speaker was scheduled to be local nobleman Lonjiku Kaijitsu, but a sudden illness has prevented him from attending the ceremony (this isn’t something that surprised the locals, given Lonjiku’s well-known dislike of frivolity and festivals). Sandpoint’s own showman Cyrdak Drokkus was more than up to the challenge of bringing the crowd’s mood back up with his rousing anecdotes. He delivered a not-completely-irreverent recap of the long process the town went through to finance and construct the new cathedral. Not one to pass up ANY opportunity, Cyrdak couldn’t resist a bit of self-promotion at the end, so he billed his upcoming play
  • Finally, Father Zantus stepped up to give a short speech, thanking everyone for coming before declaring the Swallowtail Festival underway.

During the festival, much fun, many games, and an abundance of competitions were had. Kitrifos competed in the baking competition, coming in a close second to the reigning champions from Sandpoint Savories.

The rest of the day was filled with the hustle and bustle of the fair, until time came for Father Zantus’ commemoration speech. When he used a Thunderstone to bring the crowd’s attention for the speech, the cries of terror arose as a group of goblins used the sound as a signal to begin their attack on the city.

Our group of would-be heroes found themselves in the thick of the fight, as a swarm of goblins, and then a second lead by a War Chanter set upon them, but they all survived both conflicts relatively intact.

Session 2 - Local Heroes
Putting the pieces (back) together

As Sandpoint recovers from the attack and buries its (thankfully few) dead, the citizens do their best to get on with their lives. The cathedral is consecrated the next day during a much more subdued and indoor ceremony, but by the end of the week, the goblin attack is remembered mostly with chuckles. Now that the terror of the raid is over, images of goblins accidentally lighting themselves on fire, getting stepped on by horses, or drowning in half-full rain barrels color the memories of the raid in an almost comical light. But one thing the locals haven’t forgotten is their new heroes.

Our heroes faced down another goblin raiding party, including a goblin commando and it’s pony-sized-rat mount, rescuing a visiting nobleman (Aldern Foxglove) from nearly certain death. He was incredibly grateful for your assistance, and was especially impressed with Radnarok’s fighting style – raving about how he had never seen anything move like him (or even like him) before.

Aldern insisted that the party find him at the inn he was staying at (the Rusty Dragon) sometime over the next few days so that he could properly reward them for their aid.

The next morning, each of the party was awakened just before dawn by the town sheriff, Belor Hemlock. He thanked them for their assistance with dealing with the goblin attack, and then asked them to join him and Father Zantus at the sheriff’s office as Father Zantus had specifically requested their assistance once more.

Upon arriving at the sheriff’s office, Belor thanked the party for coming on short notice and then turned things over to Father Zantus. The kindly priest explained that after things had died down last evening, he had taken his nightly stroll through the Boneyard to reflect on those who had come before. But on this particular night, he noticed that the crypt in which Ezakien Tobyn – the former town priest who died during the Late Unpleasantness – had been broken open.

Not wanting to raise alarm in the town any further, he had asked for Belor to have the party look into it and see what they could find.

At the crypt, the party immediately opened the door and two animated skeletons spilled out – which were dealt with quite easily. Our heroes then searched the surrounding area and found footprints, which Pizt identified belonged to six goblins footprints – and one humanoid – and which led from the tomb to the town wall.

Inside the crypt, they found two things. First (thanks to Kitrifos’ Detect Magic spell) was a discarded robe which was later identified as a Robe of Bones with no remaining charges, discarded in a corner. Second, and more disturbing, the coffin containing Father Tobyn’s remains had been opened and the bones were taken.

The party reported their findings to the Sheriff and Father Zantus, who told them to keep the information quiet to avoid causing a panic. Next, they left to speak to Daviren Hosk of Goblin Squash Stables about the goblin attack. Daviren gave them some information about goblin behavior that he had picked up during his time ‘in the business’ and confirmed their suspicions that he had seen at least three separate clan’s represented during the attack at the festival – but his information was a little out of date.

He told our heroes that Shalelu (a local scout) would be a better source of information – and that he had seen her ride into town a little earlier like a bat out of hell, heading for the Sheriff’s office. The party left to go find the Sheriff and see if he could introduce them to Shalelu so that they could get her take on the situation and possibly help track the goblins that had raided the crypt (as they had lost the trail on the cliff face outside of the walls).

On the way to the Sheriff’s office, a hysterical woman with babe in arms ran into the road, screaming for anyone to help her. It turned out that her son had been up all night the night before, screaming about the monster in his closet. Early that morning, as he woke them for the umpteenth time, they found bite marks on the boy’s arm, but still no trace of the ‘monster.’ The worried family stayed huddle together until dawn, when they finallt convinced the boy to go back to sleep. Just a few minutes ago, he woke them up once more and her husband ran into the room to find a goblin on the boy’s chest, and it quickly scurried back into a hole under a loose floorboard in the closet.

Radnarok and Pizt went with the woman (Amele Barrett) to investigate, while Kitrifos went on ahead to find Sheriff Hemlock. Upon arriving at the Barrett’s house, they found Alergast (the father) dead in the closet, with his face and upper-torso partially-eaten. When the body was pulled out of the closet, a crazed goblin commando came flying out of the crawlspace and attacked. After a vicious close-quarters battle, he was defeated – but not before Radnarok suffered fairly severe injuries.

The commotion of the fight and the distraught mother (now a widow) had drawn attention, and Sheriff Hemlock soon arrived on the scene. He told Pizt and Radnarok that he had been out looking for them, and must have missed Kitrifos. They were to head to his office and wait there with her while he dealt with the grieving widow. Upon his return, they would meet with Shalelu and go over some information she had obtained regarding the recent surge in goblin activity.

When the Sheriff and Shalelu returned to his office, they gathered our heroes and went to meet with Mayor Deverin. Shalelu gave her report and spoke to the party:

“Belor’s told me of your work against the goblins – well done. I’ve dedicated the last several years of my life to keeping them from causing too much trouble around these parts, but they’re tenacious and fecund little runts. Like weeds that bite.

“There are five major goblin tribes in the region, an d, traditionally, they’re pretty good at keeping each other in line with inter-tribal squabbles and the like. Yet from what I’ve been able to piece together, members of all five tribes were involved in the raid on Sandpoint. A fair number of the Mosswood goblins I dealt with yesterday were already pretty beat up, and there was a lot of chatter about the ‘longshanks’ who killed so many of them. Now that I’ve met you, it seems obvious from their descriptions who they were talking about. Seems like you’ve made an impression .

“In any event, the fact that the five tribes are working together disturbs me. Goblin tribes don’t get along unless they’ve got something big planned, and big plans require big bosses. I’m afraid that someone’s moved in on the goblins and organized them. And judging by these recent raids, what they’re organizing seems like bad news for all of us.”

After Shalelu’s speech, Sheriff Hemlock announced that he would be taking a few of his guards south to Magnimar to see about securing additional soldiers to station at Sandpoint for a few weeks. While he’s out of town, he’s asked Shalelu to scout out the home of the local goblin tribes to see if she can discover anything else about what’s going on. He also asked the PCs to maintain a public presence in Sandpoint over the next few days. “The locals seem to have taken to you. And seeing you around town will do a lot for keeping worries down over the next few days.”

As Sheriff Hemlock left to get ready for the trip, Shalelu asked our intrepid band to join her for lunch and a drink at the Rusty Dragon, so that they could discuss things further. She gave them additional information on the goblin tribes over the course of lunch, and provided them with a map of where each tribes area of influence seems to be.

Pizt’s notes for 6/11/16

Black smudges cover the hastily scrawled notes of the mad gnome. It is hard to tell what is ink and what alchemical residue but one thing is for sure: Pizt has recently eaten mutton and gravy

Note: The Rusty Dragon could be easily destroyed with a bit of alchemical fire and a well-timed incendiary reaction.

I am currently enjoying a tasty applejack, brewed to perfection. I am not surprised by Shalelu’s information about the goblin trash, whose vile presence has interrupted what was to be an otherwise profitable festival. I am only surprised that the creatures have the civility to form tribes and stake out territory. Now We, my new acquaintances and I, seem to be putting our lives on hold for the good of Sandpoint. I only hope that this venture does not halt my research as I feel like I am on the verge of a breakthrough! I discovered a hair in my applejack. It did nothing to add or subtract from the taste but I found it unsettling…

After some length of time spent querying on the applications of hair in alchemy, Pizt’s scrawling regains coherency

While talking to Shalelu, our adventures are introduced to Sasha, a good hand at the divine arts and sometimes compatriot of Shalelu. Shalelu asks Sasha to aid the party

Shalelu then briefs the PCs on the goblin tribe’s heroes. There are six: Mosswood Big
Gugararbuluzllll, one who vanished of the Seventooth clan Pristhasmus, Vorka the licktoad cannibal, the Brinestump Rinwaddle Gutwad and Chieftan, Thistletop’s Ripnugget, and the bugbear ranger Ruthaslas who hates elves. Shalelu has a history with the bugbear. Shalelu gives her thanks and leaves

The noble Foxglove descends the stairs and greets the party. He invites the group to a boar hunt in Tickwood forest. The party politely states they are busy at the moment. He sits down and regales the group with the glory of Magnimar. The city is huge. He gives the group directions to a scenic vista. Foxglove does studies for the university, he is currently studying architecture of the time before the calamity. He mentions the lighthouse is older than the town itself; no one knows the purpose of the lighthouse.

Foxglove admits the hunting trip invitation is partly for protection

The door swung open with pomp and purpose. Unsurprisingly it was Longeku Kaijutsu, striding into the tavern speaking a dialect I was unfamiliar with and being the ass his mother bore him to be. He came to our table and quite rudely demanded we tell him where Ameiko was. He then asked if I knew who he was, even though that was a stupid question. I complimented him on his glasswork but he didn’t soften. I then lost interest and fiddled with my silverware. When I looked up Ragnarok had intercepted the buffoon and I got a free meal! That Oriad is good luck indeed!

Pizt travels to the General store, Shealess Findler? Inquires if he was one of the heroes and asks if he will help her with a rat problem in the basement. Pizt follows. The basement is small and the girl is naked… he rebuffs her, but her father arrives and hijinks ensues

The sheriff returns and thanks the party. They are now free to go hunting with Foxglove. The party calls on him and pulls up a seat at the tavern. They tell him they will join him and he tells them he is gifting them a horse. They meet at the Goblin squash stables in the morning

The party leaves to Tickwood. Aldern talks the entire trip. The hunt is fun but otherwise uneventful. They return to the Rusty Dragon

En route to the Inn, and elderly Halfling who works at the Rusty Dragon approaches the party and asks to speak to them in private. The woman is the personal maid of Ameiko. Ameiko has not come to work that day, and the maid looked for her but could not find her in her room. She found a note instead that reads in Menkien?: Hello sis hope this letter finds you well, father has something to do with the goblins, meet me at the glassworks. Knock twice and then three times more, then once more. Don’t tell anyone. Don’t be late-Suto

Suto was shipped off to an orphanage because he was half-elf even though neither of his name-sake were. Suto and Ameiko had a confrontation, and Ameiko left to become an adventurer. Suto had a confrontation with Longeku? At his mother’s funeral.

The party travels to the glass works, the glass works furnace is roaring and Pizt hears shrieks giggles and breaking glass. They scout around the building. There are two doors

Session 4
Into the Glassworks

In the year of our lords 4713
When we last left our friends, they had just polished off 7 of the 8 goblins inside the glassworks building. The final goblin had just run away escaping into another room yet to be checked. Our weary band of merry heroes continue to search for Ameiko Kaijitsu, not knowing what lies behind each door. Sasha uses her cure light wounds healing spell to fix Radnarok after the battle with the goblins.

The group decides to search the rest of the room before checking the rest of the building but results in no useful things for the group. The group enters the display room when Kitrifos sees another door which leads to another hallway. Sasha listens at the door in the hallway, heals Kitrifos, and waits as Kitrifos will open the door. Kitrifos braces herself but the room reveals the finished products of the glassworks building. The group rounds the corner to see three more doors in the hallway and immediately choose to listen at all three doors. The group chooses the first door where Sasha had listened, Kitrifos checks for traps, and opens to find the broom closet.

The next door finds no traps but only misc supplies. The final door at the end of the hallway finds no traps which reveals the break room which has been wrecked and one dead body in it. The living quarters are wrecked as well. Four more doors are in the area to be checked. Pizt checks the first door which turns out to be the wash room. Sasha peeks to find the pantry wrecked and looted. Radnarok checks the door across from the pantry but hears nothing which turns out to be the kitchen which is wrecked as well. Kitrifos sees another door inside the pantry to find a storage room with wood for the fires.

Kitrifos opens the final door to show a meeting room with only one other door. Sasha and Kitrifos check the room for important documents or clues to help but discover no useful clues except glasswork designs. Kitrifos checks the door and finds another hallway with three new doors. Kitrifos and Radnarok hear a faint knocking sound below them when approaching the first door in the hallway. Kitrifos knows that the sound is someone is stomping their foot against the wall down below. The other rooms reveal filing room, components room, reception room, and an office.

The final door reveals a set of stairs headed downstairs. The group frolics down the stairs and immediately an arrow shoots past Radnarok’s head hitting the wall once they reach the bottom of the stairs. A half elf takes another shot with an arrow at Radnarok hitting him. Sasha notices the arrow is an elven arrow and tries to communicate with the half elf since she speaks elven. Sasha yells out identifying that she is an elf too but the half elf responds with “doesn’t matter what you are, you all will die the same!” Sasha fires her long bow but is unsuccessful in hitting the half elf.

Kitritfos runs forward and cast her spell against the goblin and half elf. The goblin can’t resist the attack which leaves him blinded and unconscious but the half elf does. Radnarok moves forward placing himself in between the half elf and goblin. Pizt moves up next Kitrifos. The half elf throws down his bow and uses his fist to damage Radnarok again. Sasha moves forward to help heal Radnarok. Kitrifos moves forward and takes a swing at the half elf but misses. Radnarok flurries and strikes the half elf having him smirk while he says “this is going to be fun”.

Pizt throws a bomb but lands behind and to the left of the half elf. The half elf cartwheels and lands behind Pizt. Sasha fires her bow and arrow but is unsuccessful in hitting the half elf. Kitrifos hits the half elf with her sword. Radnarok flurries and kills the goblin. Pizt’s throws his bomb but is unsuccessful in hitting the half elf with splash on himself and Kitrifos. The half elf has had enough and turns to run back towards the stairs and around the corner.

Sasha chases after while Pizt’s and Kitrifos made a last ditch effort to hit him as he was making his getaway. Sasha reaches the corner to see another long hallway with more doors. She approaches the first door that is somewhat open. Kitrifos makes her way to the door and looks into the room to see a natural passage way. Radnarok makes his way the same route as Sasha and Kitrifos. Pizt makes his way the other direction seeing two more doors down another hallway.

The group finds Ameiko Kaijitsu and tells her that her father was a part of the goblin attack along with being killed by the goblins. She ask for our help to get her back to town. Kitrifos carries her out while Pizt checks another room which turns out to be an office which was used by Tsuto Kaijitsu. Pizt’s finds a journal which tells of the raid by the goblins and another raid to come. The next raid shows an attack of 200 goblins on Sandpoint. The group takes Ameiko Kaijitsu back to the tavern and she says that we have free rooms for life.

She offers us free drinks for tonight after we get her medical attention. The group lets the sheriff in on what they have found and the journal that was discovered. The sheriff tells the group that there is no need to panic the town and guards will be posted at the natural entrance. Sasha realizes that the demon is one that will take a lot of preparation in order to defeat if encountered. After a night of drinking the group decides to investigate the natural entrance they found inside the glassworks.

The tunnel winds until they find the end but Sasha finds a stone that reveals a cave with an opening and crashing of the sea along with another tunnel that’s headed south. The narrow beach is found where they hear the crashing sea that is littered with goblin beds and trash. The southern tunnel leads you to find two side tunnels that lead east and west. The group goes to the west tunnel which leads for 50 feet and then north for 2 feet. The group comes to a side path in the cave and hears a growl of something coming from that direction. The creature bits Radnarok which injects him with venom but has little effect but the claws land some damage.

Sasha swings with sword but the creature ducks. Pizt drinks a potion. Radnarok flurries and does damage. Kitrifos shields herself deflecting the creatures attack. The creature bit does no damage, hurts Sasha, and misses Kitrifos. Sasha swings but misses again. Pizt throws a bomb that hits and fire engulfs the creature. It is burned but not dead. Ragnarok misses the creature while Kitrifos misses as well. The creature bites Radnarok but he resist. Its claw hits Sasha but misses Kitrifos. Sasha steps back and heals herself.

Pizt’s throws another bomb and hits killing the creature as it burns to death. Pizt gives Radnarok a potion to heal him almost back to full strength. Kitrifos is sure nothing is on the ground but the creature was carrying two potions, scroll, platinum piece, and 50 gold. Scroll is of heat metal. The group continues on the path. Kitrifos sees another right and it keeps going. The group continues down the new path walking into a chamber with a door inside it. Kitrifos listens, checks for traps, and finally opens the door to reveal another hallway. Rounding the corner to find another hallway.

The stones and ruins date back longer than the oldest settlers to this land. The hallway rounds another corner leading into an open chamber with a statue. Kitrifos detects some magic but nothing more. Pizt takes the rancer from the statue. The group back tracks down the hallway they passed finding at the end an alter used by necromancers. There is unholy water present. The massive stone door inside the chamber shows no traps but a magical aura coming from the other side. The group decides to hold off on the massive stone door until they have finished searching the other hallways and doors.

At the end of the other hallway with the statue they find a non-natural creature that has a head with batwings and entrails that it uses as tentacles. Kitrifos hits and damages it with her sword. Radnarok misses with his strikes. Pizt throws a bomb hitting the creature. The creature screams paralyzing everyone except Sasha. The creature turns its attention towards Kitrifos but misses with its attack. Sasha cast a spell freeing Kitrifos. Kritifos begins moving and starts channeling magic into her sword hitting the creature splitting it into two pieces. The creature has a ton of hidden treasures. The group finds a spiral stair that heads up.

The group back tracks down the hallway towards the statue again and down the only hallway that the group hasn’t searched yet. The group finds an unlock door with a large chamber with cells and two spirals stairs going down. As they look over the edge a boney claw swings at the group.

The group is engaged by two boney creatures. The first creature hits Kitrifos, the second hits Radnarok, Radnarok damages the second creature, Kitrifos missed hitting the first, Sasha attacks and hits the second, Pizt slaps the first with club hitting the creature, the first creature strikes Pizts with emotions of rage that sickens him while clawing him, the second creature bits Ragnarok and the claws hit putting Ragnarok on the ground in critical condition, Kitrifos attacks the first one but misses, Sasha moves back heals Ragnarok bringing him back to life, Ragnarok hits the second creature killing it, Pizt misses the first creature, the first bites at Kitrifos missing and claws Pizt for damage, Kitrifos swings at the first creature missing, Sasha heals Ragnarok, Ragnarok misses with both attacks, Pizt backs up and drinks potion, the creature bites at Kitrifos and she fights off while it swings at Ragnarok hitting with one claw, Kitrifos hits creature causing damage and setting it a blaze, Sasha pulls her bow but it becomes undone, Ragnarok hits and finally the creature dies. The group continues on checking the area to find a torture chamber with two doors. The door to the south is slightly open.

The room has a study and jail cells in which Pizt and Ragnarok search. Pizt finds a scroll of flaming sphere. More treasures are found in the study/jail area. Money, Money, Money!!! Group decides to rest and recover from the battles. What’s in store for our heroes next time? Stay tuned for our next adventure……..”Legends of the Hidden Temple”

Session 5
Below the city

We continue our adventure in the ancient caverns and tunnels below the city. Our group decides to begin the day by taking on the first door we came to in the tunnels. As soon as we enter we are greeted by an unidentifiable voice. “How dare you enter the Mother’s Sanctuary”.

We are attacked by a barrage of creatures, which we all team up to defeat. These creatures are being summoned by someone from somewhere. By detecting magic, Kitrifos and Sasha narrow down the location of the unknown assailant. Finally we use glitterdust to make her visible. Again we team up to take down the trixy quasit. We search the room and find a few treasures to sell in town. In one alcove ancient Thassalonian words show themselves to Kitrifos, and no one else. Strange to say the least. This is a mystery for another day.
We find that adding blood to one of the pools summons monsters. We emptied the fountain of its water that turns into monsters, defeating them one by one.

Backtracking a bit,we explore the two stairwells. They are both completely blocked with rubble. We can faintly hear the people in the junkyard above and Pizt believed he heard baying of hounds from below.

The final doorway in the underground leads us to a disgusting goblin with three arms, each wielding a weapon. We are attacked. The hideous creature nearly ended Kitrifos before the team weakened him and Radnarock felled him with a might flurry of fists. Thankfully, using the potions made by Pizt and Sasha’s magical healing the team made it out of the fight better than expected. Lastly, we dealt with the zombies in the pits of this room. They would have been a lot of trouble, had any of us ended up down in the one of their holes.

Once the tunnels and chambers are cleared we return to town. It is recommended that the tunnel leading out to the beach be filled to keep out any would be attackers in the future.
Next we plan where to go to put an end to the troubles of this town. TO THISTLETOP!
